Fishing Wharf
This is my second piece done with Primacolor pencil on vellum. It was drawn on 11 x 17, but should've probably gone bigger, due to the amount of detail. well, you learn something new everytime and I can't wait to get started on the next one. I always enjoy watching other artists work in progress, so I decided to throw in a couple of my own sketches that lead to the final piece. First a couple of quick sketches to get an idea of where I'm going, then a simple perspective drawing to make sure it's solid. A few quick character designs and the last step before transfering to vellum is the detailed under-drawing. I normally make a few copies of the under-drawing to roughly play around with shading, so I have a basic idea of light source when I start shading on vellum.

This is a terrific job, congratulations.
I will add that I am impressed, you are able to see a lot, and draw a lot. Because of this, you are already ahead of most of your competition. This is much the same place I was coming from when I started. The problem for me wasn't a lack of detail or imagination, but learning to focus my detail and leading the viewer's eyes with my compositions.
Because you asked, I will give you some constructive criticism. Right now, when I look at your drawing, my focus is scattered and I'm not sure what to focus on. Think of the story you want to tell, and draw your design to reinforce that idea.
For example, if your story is about a bait shop that has been abandoned and inhabited by birds, let that be the focus of your drawing. If your bait shop is run by an old ships captain who has decorated his shop to look like a merchant ship, let that be your focus. By focusing your details, you can reinforce your narrative illustration.
Ask yourself, "who lives in this bait shop?" The back story to your characters will help you to be more narative with your drawing. Just like my illustration of Whitmore's library from my development work on Atlantis, the items in his library tell us who Preston Whitmore is.

That is an excellent sketch! I love the realism in the wharf. Looks so much like the one I visited when I came down to Daytona beach. Do you make sketches of places or use photo references?

Arvindh : Thanks for your comment:) I hardly ever draw excisting places. I do use photo references, but mostly to study light and shadow.
Marcelo: Wow, you have no idea how much I appreciate you saying that!:) You have been a great help and my biggest inspiration.
I can definitely see what you mean by missing focus points, I have the same feeling when looking at it, don't know quite where to rest my eyes.

This is a great one! It was cool to see your progress sketches, as well as being able to read constructive crits from Marcelo. That is one of my favorite things about being an artist- the fact that no matter how good we might think we are, there is always something else we can learn. I have been learning so much lately from blogging- it's great that so many talented artists such as yourself are willing to share what they do and what they know online! Creativity rules! Thanks for the comments on my "old" artwork also!
